Curaçao Heritage and cultural tour
(August 15 to November 15,2006)

Walking well

This well was constructed in 1795, the same period when Fort Nassau was built.
This monument has never been renovated. It is in very good condition and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is named the “walking well” because you are actually entering the well by using stairs with your bucket to fetch water. The Europeans, who dominated the Caribbean at that time and sailed into the harbor of Curacao, depended on this particular well. This is where they found water when they arrived and restocked before leaving for Europe again.

Fort Nassau

One of four forts, Fort Nassau was named after the Royal House of Orange. It was built primarily for the defence of both the St. Anna Bay and the city of Willemstad. For years it has functioned in the service of the harbor office as a signal and control tower regulating the opening and closing of the “Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge.” The fort was constructed on top of a hill that offers you a spectacular and panoramic view of the island. Nowadays Fort Nassau offers fine dining. (UNESCO LIST)

Tula Monument

This monument was erected to commemorate leaders of the slave revolution of August 17, 1795 in Curacao. Tula and his supporters rebelled against the slave owners and the Crown. Tula, Karpata, Mercier and Wacao were sentenced to death and executed. Today we pay homage to these brave men who were executed because they died paving way for our freedom.

Hato Caves

This is one of a handful of underground caves. It is also a very interesting and beautiful living cave. Here you will see stalactites and stalagmites formations and an underground natural water reservoir. In the past this particular cave also was used as a hiding place by the runaway slaves.

Slave Wall

As you are driving to the western part of the island into the countryside, you will see the “slave wall” built by the slaves. One stone at the time being carried by hand, stone after stone, day after day........ This was just to mark the boundaries where each landowner’s plantation was situated.

Boca Tabla

This is a spectacular site and one of 7 inlets of the Park "Shete Boka" located to the most northern side of the island. Millions of years of pounding surf have carved out a wide cavern underneath the limestone terrace. You can enter the cavern where you can watch and listen to the surf rolling in. Above you will see the breathtaking waves crashing against the north coast cliffs for miles in each direction. Here is where you will meet the sound of nature.

Jaanchie's Restaurant

The local restaurant is named after the owner. Jaanchi is the “walking menu” of the establishment. You will feast on delicious local cuisine which is included in this tour. At Jaanchie’s you can relax in a real island atmosphere while enjoying the open-air aviary just outside the dining room. Hundreds of “Yellow Belly” and “Trupial” birds are fed here on the house by Jaanchie. Enjoy your lunch and get re-energized to continue your tour to see much more about Curacao. Do remember to bring your camera as there will be lots of photo opportunities.

Knip Beach or Playa Kenepa

Knip Beach is one of over 36 beaches. Note the towering cacti, which is part of our landscape, as we are driving you through the countryside. The vegetation ranges from scruffy bushes to stately cacti. Most of the island looks like the Southwest of the USA but with beautiful crystal clear turquoise waters looking invitingly at you. This is Curacao, real and different.

Plantation House Groot Santa Martha

One of the wealthiest plantation homes from the past which today is still a working plantation. Originally built in 17th century, it was completely restored in 2001. This plantation house was known for its saltpans, sugarcanes and cattle breeding. This is a true monument on the estate. You will also see antique furniture. Allow time to take you back. Today "Groot Santa Martha" houses a social workshop for the physically and mentally challenged. Beautiful souvenirs, arts and crafts are made here by these men and women. There will be time to see the exhibition presented by NAAM.
